Going Green Has Never Been More Affordable

The 2025–26 Federal Budget signalled a clear direction for energy policy: make clean energy upgrades more accessible for Australian households and businesses, using a combination of direct rebates and government-backed finance. If you’ve been thinking about solar panels, battery storage, a heat pump hot water system, or other energy-efficient upgrades, this year may be the most financially favourable time to act.

Here’s a guide to the green finance options available to Australian homeowners and small businesses in 2025–26.

Government-Backed Green Loans

The Australian Government has channelled significant funding into the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), which partners with private lenders — including major banks and specialist green lenders — to offer discounted finance for clean energy and energy efficiency upgrades.

These green loans are typically characterised by lower interest rates than standard personal or business loans, loan terms suited to the payback period of the upgrade (typically 3–7 years), and eligibility for a wide range of upgrades including solar panels, battery storage, insulation, double-glazing, heat pump hot water systems, and home electrification. The CEFC has committed an additional $2 billion specifically to support households and small businesses making the transition to all-electric, energy-efficient homes. This capital flows through to borrowers as below-market interest rates through partner lenders.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program: A Rebate Plus Finance

For homeowners specifically looking at solar battery storage, the government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program (launched 1 July 2025) provides an upfront rebate of approximately $311 per usable kWh of battery capacity. For a typical 10kWh system, that’s over $3,000 off the purchase price before finance is even considered.

Pairing this rebate with a competitive green loan can make the investment cash-flow neutral from day one — your monthly loan repayment can be offset by reduced electricity bills, particularly if you’re also generating solar energy.

Energy Bill Relief for Households and Small Businesses

On top of long-term financing options, the 2025–26 Budget extended the Energy Bill Relief Fund, providing eligible households with $150 in direct credits applied to electricity bills. Around one million eligible small businesses also received up to $150 in energy bill rebates. While this doesn’t directly affect loan eligibility, it does improve disposable income for households and cash flow for small businesses — both of which support the ability to service finance for larger energy upgrades.

What Upgrades Are Typically Covered by Green Loans?

Green loans available through CEFC-backed programs and specialist lenders typically cover solar panel installation (new systems or upgrades), home battery storage systems, heat pump hot water heaters, insulation and draught sealing, double-glazed windows, efficient heating and cooling systems, and EV charging infrastructure for homes and small businesses. Business owners can also look at energy-efficient equipment upgrades, which may qualify for the Small Business Energy Incentive — a 20% bonus tax deduction on top of standard depreciation for assets that support electrification or more efficient energy use.

Making the Numbers Work

The key question for any green upgrade is whether the investment makes financial sense. With the combination of government rebates, lower interest rates on green loans, and ongoing savings on energy bills, many upgrades now have payback periods of 5–8 years — and a loan term to match means the repayments can be structured to align with those savings.

The economics are particularly compelling for homeowners with existing solar panels who are still selling excess energy back to the grid at falling feed-in tariff rates. Adding battery storage allows you to use that energy yourself at a higher effective value.
